I was looking for somewhere last night to stay NYE. Ridiculous how the prices sky rocket. Anyone know any decent 'non chain' hotels that are less likely to have 4x their price?

The problem is most hotels will put their prices up. It's natural to due to demand. We always stay here The award winning low cost stylish hotel in the heart of Shoreditch | Hoxton Hotel in the City of London

Not sure about NYE, but when we stayed in London we were in a hotel next to the excel conference center, and because there was nothing on there it was very cheap for the room we got. (Aloft London Excel | Free WiFi | Best Rates Guaranteed)

This was just a normal week over Easter though.

I'd go the British Museum, where you can easily spend the weekend marvelling at all the stuff we have plundered from around the world including, the Rosetta Stone (Rosetta Stone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), Parthenon marbles (Elgin Marbles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), sculptures and reliefs from the Tomb of Mausolas (Mausoleum at Halicarnassus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Then, in the evening, starting from Tower Hill, walk across Tower Bridge, then head West along South Bank, all the way down to Westminster, stopping at Southwark Cathedral, The Globe Theatre, Millenium Bridge, Tate Modern, and South Bank Centre.
