I was going to suggest Tobuscus. He is funny, but sometimes I do wish he would just shut up. [Mainly because I'm trying to listen to a cutscene.]

I'm pretty addicted to Yogscast, but it gives me an urge to fire up the game (minecraft for example)

    Am I Weird?

Good title for a thread, cos it allows for opening the subject up.....

Thus, am I weird? I watch my stepson play Minecraft, and to be honest, I cannot see what all the fuss is about. Graphics are s**t, gameplay seems to be nigh on non-existent, except for run around building blocky things. Can anyone explain the attraction of playing a game that wouldn't look out of place in 1987?

Lol no, not like that. We are all gamers so there was no telling him what to do, unless he asked.

Gameplay > Graphics (I could point to many, mostly indie games, that pull this off). Minecrafts specific gameplay hook is that it allows you to create. At its core it's basically a massive lego set and you can't lose or stand on any of the pieces.

Digital lego! with zombies! and porkchops!

It can actually be a quite technical game, which you might not see if your stepson is youngish and doesn't dabble into the redstone side of the game where you can make logic gates to power traps and doors. There are a fair few decent mods for it too, such as industrial craft that allow you to create complicated machines that ready do require some thought and planning.

    Ravensholm.... GULP!

I'd forgotten how truly scary that could be on a dark night with the lights off!!!

Just started Black Mesa too....That takes me back to HL....and it does look so much nicer!

I see where you're coming from. The game is ugly as sin. There's no need for a game to be ugly. It doesn't have to be pretty, but ugly is a problem.

However, I tried the game and I'm addicted. Gave myself crippling tendonitis from playing it too much.

I don't know why I'm addicted, but I am. It's easy to pick up, easy to put down. I'm having a blast building stuff. Iron-age hillforts, latifundia, Roman temples, all sorts of stuff. I haven't even started on playing with the electrical circuits.

Might try some of the anti-ugliness mods to get rid of the fugly.

mods is where the game just explodes. eg rp2 (eloram i love you) ic2 bc and mystcraft are where its at but if you want a harder game add terrafermacraft or better then wolves.
both add a whole new lay of complexity

Minecraft can be made a lot prettier with a high res texture pack. But OTOH there is something to be said for letting your imagination do the work, but then I do play stuff like Cart Life, Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Crawl, Stone Soup. There also seems to be a bit of a resurgence of '8-bit' retro style games these days which is cool.

I couldn't get on with Dwarf Fortress. Ugly I can live with but ASCII is a step too far. I'll take a look at some of the mods and texture packs.
