I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays!
Does anybody out there have an opinion on what the cheapest way to phone America is? There's only one catch to this - Skype (or anything similar) is ruled out: it has to be phone-to-phone.

Get a Phone to Skype adapter for this end.
Use SkypeOut for the US end.
I've got an account with Alpha Telecom. I can phone NZ anytime of day for a mere 3p/min (landline to landline). The only time I ever have any probs with their service is when every-man-and-his-dog is likely to be phoning and all the lines get jammed (e.g Xmas and New Years, etc)
I think their rate to USA is the same...

By 'anything similar' do you include all VOIP systems? So, for example, an account with Vonage with one of their Linksys adapters and a normal phone connected to it would be out of the question?
I guess VOIP isn't really out of the question. I'm just aware that my girlfriend would rather be able to call me via a normal telephone without having to learn some new-fangled equipment.Originally Posted by localzuk
Also, being a mere ICT Technician means I am not wholly able to afford an new-fangled equipment.

Then could use skype with a skypein number she calls you on skypein number as far as she is aware she is calling a landline.Originally Posted by sqdge

Also Budgetcom. I've used them for ages now and the prices seem OK.

Is it always the same person or people in the USA which are being called? If so, how about buying a bunch of the tesco phone things, send them to the people in the USA and use them? http://direct.tesco.com/promo/?id=A07008785
Ok, they need a computer turned on, but using them is just like a normal phone.
