    Question Car Question - 2003 VW Golf/Passat/Bora 2.8L V6 Cam Chain/Belt?

Hi, posting here in case someone has more of a clue on this - quite likely - than e. I a looking at a 2003 VW Bora 2.8L V6 six speed manual (this is the V6 not the VR6).

It has 120,000k on the clock and there appears to be no history of if the cam belt/chain has been changed.

The problem is I have not yet been able to nail down if it has a belt or a chain as the sources are contradictory. Either way I can't find the service interval for it.

Any help or clues would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Edit: Rep for anyone with definitive sources

That sounds about right. A memeber of my family has just bought a passat and wondered when the cam belt needed changing. I rang a VW garage and they said at 60,000 and 120,000 miles.

Cool, miles right, that's about 100,000kms which helps, do you know which engine your family member had - 2.8 V6 ?

    V6 4Motion - camBELT or camCHAIN???? - uk-mkivs

    VWVortex.com - 24v "Official" DIY/FAQ......

    From those, you're talking camchain...

Regular oil changes to keep it clean and avoid gunk that can clog oiler jets (unlike Vx 2.2's, heh), I wouldn't worry at that mileage.

Had an Astra 2.2 overtake my 1.6 yesterday...sounded godawful, very rattly..at some point soon, that 2.2 is dead from a snapped chain due to the recall not being followed..tut.

Never saw the point in moving to belt from chain, TBF. Duplex timing chains FTW. If there was a chain conversion for my 1.6, I'd fit it like a shot.

Always liked the Bora, and having had a temp Golf MK6 1.6FSI with the 7 speed DSG gearbox, ye gods I'd imagine that'd go. I want another DSG box one day.

They only have the 2.0 diesel.

Probably a different set of rules with it then, if its is the chain then hopefully it will last for ages anyway. It is surprisingly hard to find this stuff online as they seem to use different engines in everything. The 2.8 v6 Petrol seems to be a bit of a specialty but it revs very nicely. I can feel my wallet getting noticeably lighter every time I put my foot down though

Well I ended up buying it, was the VR6 4Motion and yes it is rather umm 'rapid'. Still not 100% sure on the chains state as the engine is loud on cold start but apparently the 24v is much nicer on chains than the 12v. It actually seems to be more economical than my 2.5L Vectra which is disturbing.
