Yellow could be cloud/skype/azure or it could be Windows Phone 8 although I would have thought that would have been blue.

Ah yes, but when MS had the logo consultants in, one of their first questions was 'Your name is Windows - why are you a flag?'
    Redesigning the Windows Logo

A logo should be instantly identifiable across a room. They (top companies, at least) care nothing for complexity, artistry - it's all about recognition, nothing else. Take the Orange logo - the work 'orange' in Helvetica in an orange box. Simple, but you can pick it out at half a mile. Of course, that's not to say that the new simple Windows logo is any good...

In most cases, simple is good.

When Steve Jobs was making his NeXT computer system, he had Paul Rand design the logo. He asked Rand for choices, but Rand said there will be no choice - but you will pay me $100,000 whether you use it or not. You could argue one hundred grand is a lot for a square, but Steve liked it.
Creative Review - Rand v Jobs: when egos collide

This is an engaging read, by the way, and details some of the design process that led to the NeXT logo.

Maybe the flag was too hard to make into glowing signs?

It appears to be live now on parts of microsoft.com. They dont explain what the yellow colour is supposed to represent but blue is Windows, red is Office and green is Xbox.
    Thoughts?

The colors haven't changed since the old logo, the new logo is all about it seems a restyling to fit in with the metro style where I'm guessing there's no room for wavy lines.

Apples logo has undergone a far more radical snake up over the years. The windows logo is no more untouchable when it comes to redesign.

It's not a new logo, just a rehash of their old one, a 4 pane window. The colours mean nothing as the green was there before the xbox was conceived.

@mattlynch - stop viewing the logo as two separate icons and view them as either side or the outline of a person. It looks like the torso of a naked pregnant lady with nothing above the lower chest or below the bottom swell of her 'bump'.

I think it is more likely that the colour of XBox was chosen BECAUSE it was in the logo, not the other way around - the colours were there in windows 3.1 and I assume they were chosen from the limited colour palatte of early OSs. I expect they'll eventually have another product that is themed Yellow to match. Until then they have a 'spare' colour.
