Will leave it running for a bit longer then.

Muahaha, my empire has sprung from nowhere! Have to admit, I've taken the easy route of air travel though, instant profit really!
Have been playing this a bit single player. Conclusion: I suck.
Any advice? I don't like trains much as they get lost and the signaling is a bit opaque... but is it possible to turn a profit on a road network?
Trains are great fun - but it can take a while to get a design down and working properly. Spent a couple of hours designing a central interchange and then RORO stations across the map with mainlines and branch lines.
The signalling works well, have you looked at the wiki for details? Loads of examples on there.
I had a nice little mail/valuables company going.
For signals, the OpenTTD Wiki is a must if you want to use them properly. There are two types, block and path. Block defines an area that is impassable if another train ocuppies that block. Path will attempt to create a route from Signal A to Signal B and proceed if clear.
Path is easier to use as you place one facing the train at the platform and one at the junction where you want another train to wait (preferably so it doesn't block everything else!). Path signals can also designate a track as one way and they are defined by the signal with the white and red square on the rear.
Signals are a game in themselves but easy one you figure out how to make places to wait and know what signal should go where.
Just reboot the server, slight change to the settings, 1024×1024 loaded ok, but by connect kept getting issues losing connection, ok it recovered but… anyway, have set it to 1024×512. See how that goes. He is a screenshot of the final results.

I should ban myself from using air transport... It is just far too easy to make money, but then again, as I joined when so much land had been taken up already, there was very little else to do.
