MMO server install

Does anyone know of an MMO that is suitable for KS2 students?

Something free and with a LEGAL private/custom server installer... If such a thing exists.

Also, if it runs on Linux it's be most appreciated. If not, I'll have to mess around to sort it.


The plan, which hasn't been finalised or approved, is to set up a LAN MMO for [IIRC] "gifted students."

External connection may, or may not, be allowed.

It's not quite an MMO, it's also not free, but Minecraft is probably going to fit the purpose. Minimal hardware requirements for clients, ability to have private servers, runs on Windows and Linux. The more users it has the more bandwidth it'll need, but beyond that it's quite simple. It will need an internet connection, but only to authenticate clients at login.

There's a lot of Mods for server admin support, and backups so if anyone mucks around you can revert the server to a previous state.

It's really good fun, and certainly doesn't contain any risque content.

Terraria Dedicated Server can run on a home PC and is easy to run and administer from a command prompt and you can open it to the outside world by forwarding only one port to the server. You build stuff and stave off attacks by zombies at night like Minecraft. Downside is the game requires Steam to play.

I suspect that, whatever you set up for them, they'll be running MW3 by the end of the first week (if they're 'gifted'). I advise you to give them the kit, put them on a discrete network and never look in that room again, because you won't like what you see

I remember back in the day EverQuest had some private server installs. Not sure on legality etc but it does fit the bill.

But it looks like it's just a private server to connect to. I'm looking to internally host the server here.

That way we can keep an eye on what is said in the chat-log and we know who the people playing are.

Gifted was in quotes for a reason.

MW3 won't be installed. Even if I gave them the disk and told them how to do it, it wouldn't appear on the network.

We had the same idea, a teacher ran a club in a room with 10 computers for homework and such.

Then I found out he had installed 10 cracked copies of GTA, Halflife and MW on them. As well as other dodgy stuff that I cant really disclose.

I corrupted the installs, and eventually took the room down as it wasn't correctly supervised and was a liability!

That's the plan.

I may even set it up so that if the game client is running, it's full screen, disables window switching and can't be closed without a password.

Our kids play games every friday lunch time ina n IT suite, and I supervise them.

We have several games they can play, all run from a network share and they have to use a special account that is disabled except in Games Club time.

Edit: All the games they play are free to play, and have no blood or guts in them etc.
