Xbox I/O port missing - so how do I update
Hi all, the Xbox belongs to my teenage son (never off the thing) & it keeps loosing its wireless connection. Have come to the conclusion that it needs to download some updates as I don't think this has ever been done. It is the older type Xbox with the inbuilt HD - now I have come to above conclusion & was going to bring it downstairs to connect to ethernet port I find it is missing.
Apparently Xbox was dropped months ago and that bit dislodged - now what do I do? Can this be fixed at all or as son thinks he will need new Xbox, if new Xbox is needed can I transfer the HD over to newer slimline Xbox?
Any answers much appreciated.

Just to clarify, do you mean the original Xbox?

If it's just the Ethernet port which is damaged, you could buy a spare one from Maplins for example and resolder it back onto the Xbox's motherboard (or get someone to do this for you). Another option would be to replace the entire motherboard (there are lots on eBay), but you need to make sure you buy one which also includes a hard drive. This is because the hard drive in the Xbox is password protected and the key to unlock it is stored on a chip on the motherboard. Without the correct password, the Xbox will not work. The password is unique to each motherboard & HDD which is why you have to buy them together. There are ways around this, but it involves modding the console which is fairly complicated. A third option (and by far the simplest) would be to buy a second-hand Xbox or brand new Xbox 360.

Sadly not.

Hi, thanks for the reply. He has an Xbox 360 but the cream/white one not the new black elite one (although other son has one of those), anyway rather than take console apart would it owrk if I bought the USB to Ethernet adapter? Is there a specific brand/type/model I would have to buy to make sure it would work?
Thanks again

24th October 2011, 11:33 AM #4 Since you mentioned wireless in your first post, do you already have one of Microsoft's wireless network adapters? i.e.

Extremely unlikely.
You can actually update the Xbox 360 by downloading the latest system update from the link below and burning it to a blank CD or DVD or putting it on a USB flash drive. It's really easy.

Hi,
I have the wireless adapter listed below - we just put it into one of the USB ports on the front of the console.

Will it then just load off the CD onto the Xbox - sorry for 'dumb' questions.

Have just followed steps, downloaded file, unzipped, burned to CD-RW disc but the console doesn't recognise it - it goes to loading & then just blanks & says 'open tray'.
The xbox should read the disc ?? is there a way round this. I have double checked the disc & the system update folder is on there - help again, sorry.

Does your disc look like this after you burnt it?

24th October 2011, 07:24 PM #9 I'm not sure that an update would resolve the issues, how strong is the wireless signal where the 360 is located? I'd try using it closer to the access point/router. Sounds like he's been very lucky to damage just the ethernet port and nothing else

24th October 2011, 08:07 PM #10 My son's xbox 360 wouldn't connect to wifi until I updated it... I used a wired connection. If this xbox has never been updated, this is likely to be the cause of the wifi problem
