The iConsole on its way?

And it does make sense. It's about the only high profit consumer IT arena that Apple have not yet ventured into. Imagine them making an all in one console-OSX-AppleTV device. Actually, scrub OSX (they will still want you to buy Macs after all), but some net connectivity almost certainly.

Probably be an iOS device with high end graphics. Trouble is, why should they venture into this market when PC, Xbox and PS3 already own the gaming domain with Wii picking up the rear for consoles?

Because in the true manner of Apple, sheeple will flock to buy it's godly goods even if they aren't the best on the market.

I hate to see what it looks like and the price tag associated with it! I wonder if people will jailbreak it like they have with iOS on ipods etc
Bets if they bring it out, how much it will cost, and if they release a new version every 6 months

This makes me think. If people thought the PS3 and Xbox360 were locked down they ain't seen nothing yet.
How likely is it that they wait a year or so then try to ban the sale of their compeditors for dareing to use the Apple 'invented' idea of a console. The fall update to Xbox brings in Metro and silverlight apps which I'm sure Apple will consider plagerisum of their future console.

I'd guess they would go down the route of streaming videogames instead of local games, utilising their iCloud.

I think you mean the ill fated Pippin which was one of the first things Jobs stopped when he took back over at Apple.

TBH I think there is more chance of them buying someone out who already has a large IPR / Patent stake in this market and using this to bring out something which combines a number of functions, whether AppleTV or MacMini. Whether games builders will port things to yet another device is a question, but if it is iOS / LionOS friendly then there is a better chance ... I don't see it happening before the converged mobile/desktop OS is done though.

iConsole = iPad 2 or iPhone 4S + AirPlay Mirroring + Apple TV?

To be completely honest, in order for a living room console combo to work it needs to have gaming, and that is the one area that Apple still fail in.
Domination of the home computer market by the PC was larely because of the vast range of leisure (read gaming) software in the market.
You will still get funny looks from gamers if you suggest using a Mac (of any kind) to play games.
This has always amazed me as, especially in the last decade, the games indeustry has become a bigger cash earner (according to various reports) than the movie industry.. and why wouldn't Apple want a piece of that?
Maybe they'll partner up with one of the new stremaing game service providers?

or, knowing them, they will buy out someone with a large patent stake then sue every other console for infringing the apple patents, forcing them to stop selling worldwide, then release a console that looks slick, but has very little functionality and wait for the bbc to put an article up saying "is the new xbox an iconsole killer?"

Cloked as a story of course as Apple probably spends more buying jouronlists than they do on their more mainstream versions of brainwashing.

+1 for that - and their position in the consumer market in general means that when they claim to have invented game streaming, Joe Public will believe it
