Try Oolite. It's Elite for the 21st Century, tons of fun. And best of all it's free with tons of add-ons and extensions. Go on. Lose your life again

Bioshock and Deadspace both drip atmosphere and are worth a look. As for old favorites, Star Trek Armarda can always waste a few hours of my time, works under Vista and I think 7 as well.

Indiana jone and the fate of atlantis < Wicked game.

Battlezone < The Pc version not the arcade.

Dune < Very atmospheric sounds and music at the time.

Star Wars: Knights of the old republic - it had a better story line than all three of the prequels.

Nearly agree with @Butters but I prefer Streets of Rage II for Mega Drive.
Doom 1 and Quake for FPS too, I can still walk through most levels in my mind right now, knowing all the traps and speedrun areas

I have Streets of Rage 1/2/3 on my phone, it's bliss on the tube when smacking people with steel pipes.
