I choose ATI video cards, since I used for 2 years in studying 3D and CAD.
Also ATI GPU's is not for gaming only but also for designing such high quality of 3D rendered image.

I don't use linux unless in a virtual machine so a moot point for me lol.
So far I have been with nvidia but I think nvidia need to pull there socks up a bit as they are now falling behind as ATI have had the 5870 and also brought out the 5890 out and still no sign of the 300 series GTX cards.
If they don't do something soon and ATI make a mac version of the 5870 I think I will be tempted to get one.
Thats the funny thing with linux. Things can change very fast or not at all.
My new laptop has a Nvidia Geforce GT130m and is running very smoothly with ubuntu 9.10.
I have heard horror stories about the GT230M though.

I still play EVE online with my XFX HD4890 1GB, and have yet to have any problems with Linux drivers, added the fact ATI are really pushing Linux drivers which seems the best way forward. Newer releases of *BSD support the F790 chipset out of box and play very nice.
ATI/AMD fan, always have been, always will be. Added lifetime support for over clocking, mine has been faultless.
