Been playing it since January 29th, and have a 12 month subscription (if you pre-ordered, you could get a 12month subscription for about £85, or a lifetime subscription for about £200 IIRC).

Good game. Note it is not an Eve copy. It is more like a traditional MMO.

It is full of bugs, but all MMOs are at launch. They're fixing them pretty damned quickly though. I'm enjoying it anyway.

I've never looked into anything like this before so excuse the basic questions

I've clicked on a buy link and I've got 2 options £50 and £30 for deluxe or basic

Do I then have to pay a subscription on top of this?

Anyway of trying it out before paying?

    regards

    Simon

    Deluxe comes with some extras

    DIGITAL DELUXE EDITION
The Star Trek Online Digital Deluxe Edition offers such bonuses as five exclusive in-game items as well as the ability to play as a “Joined Trill” – a symbiote that grants you several lifetimes of experience. The five exclusive in-game items include:
Original Star Trek Uniform Set: Three uniforms from the original series (blue, red, yellow).
Exclusive “KHAAAN!” Emote: An unforgettable moment from the second Star Trek Film. This exclusive emote allows players to relive Kirk’s unforgettable moment of fury, with the timeless cry… “KHAAAN!”
Exclusive Klingon Blood Wine Toast Emote: Raise a glass like a Klingon! Greet other players with an exclusive Klingon gesture –the blood wine toast.
Unique Registry Prefix: Give your ship the coveted NX prefix, seen only on a handful of elite Starfleet vessels like the Defiant, 22nd century Enterprise, and Prometheus.
Unique Ship Item: Automated Defense Battery. This Tactical Module grants any ship a passive 360 arc attack power with a short range.
Also, the steam costs are 29.99 and 39.99 now. I paid the £50 for deluxe pre-order... And there doesn't appear to be a trial version.

The trial version is the one you buy!!!

If you don't like your "paid for trial" after 30 days, you don't have to pay the subscription ;-)

Not playing, read the reviews, watched the videos, and its just a mask over POTBS (Pirates of the Burning Sea) Same style of game, same classes, just different rules.

Actually its almost so alike to POTBS I can't bring myself to play it at all.

Could anything be an Eve copy? Such a massive and unique sandbox, it'd be hard to copy the elements of the game without it being noticed and slammed, it however is a direct copy/clone of POTBS, just different genre and a few new things added here and there.

Finding this lots of fun, although there is no end game content yet.

There probably won't be, just how the game is designed, or there will be, but due to mechanics will be so limited it won't be worth it.

POTBS are having a free one-month trial for their second birthday, head over and play the game for a bit and you'll see the similarities between the two.

I anticipated and really hoped STO would be new, new mechanics and massive end game potential, but its completely failed.
