Great story lines is what I normally go for in games. But then I do prefer RPGs to FPS.

Dragon Age, Assassins Creed 2 and 3 and The Walking Dead are some recent ones that I have loved. FF7 is my all time favourite though :-)

+1 for Dragon age (can't went for the next installment of that)

Fire emerld awakening was really good as well.

I see your Final Fantasies and I raise you Skies of Arcadia God rest the Dreamcast.

Oh, and The Witcher games. 1 is a bit creaky gameplay wise now, but the setting and the world are incredible. Witcher 3 is the only game I'm looking forward to right now, tbh.

For me its ones that finish and it either hits you with a "WTF!" or you just wish there was more (in a good way):

    Max Payne 2
Dragon Age 1 (didnt get on with #2)
    BioShock
    TES Morrowind Oblivion
    Metro 2033
    Stalker
    Fallout (1,2, 3 & Vegas)

I especially like ones with alternative or secret endings (wont say which ones in case of spoilers!)

Just to come back to the Legacy of Kain series for a second.

There's extensive time travel involved. How many games with great stories are there that regularly cross their own timelines back and forth from game to game?

Indeed, Bioshock and Wolfenstein New Order both stick out for me. I've played the latter through 4 times now and it still impresses me.

All of the Fallout Episodes along with Skyrim - in fact Bethesda are pretty good at the open world immersive game genre.

Another favourite of mine where they really managed to capture the time the game was set in was GTA Vice City. It was a real piece of the 1980s and that whole Miami Vice thing

better than the second generation of films in my opinion and you can now play it on IOS
I really need to go back and give those games another try, i played the second one before i played the first, did 5-6 hours on it, then i thought "i want to play the first before i go any further" but got bored I'm not sure if i just lost interest as it was around the time of my counter strike addiction, or if the story in the first didnt grab me as much as the second, but I've got ot give it another try soon!

I would recommend the original Deus Ex. Good main story and side stories. It has multiple ways to accomplish your missions/goals and different endings based on your choices

Though not a massive game player, I thought that Passage by Jason Rohrer had a pretty good storyline.

Oh my god, yes. Cannot recommend this enough. The gameplay ended a little sub-par by Defiance, but the story was great and the writing was superb. Given that the story involves time travel at some points, there's not too many plot holes, either.

    Get out. VIII.
    VII was terribly boring.
