They're still in talks apparently, over how independent Twitch will be.

This. It's supposed to be cutting edge yet vanilla 20+ year old IRC is showing it up really, really badly.

Oh, it isn't IRC - it is a custom service set up to mimic IRC. If it were actual IRC, it'd be rock solid!!

This is just a terrible bit of news, if it goes through. I suspect that many people will simply leave the service when Google inevitably start changing everything.

It is actually IRC. I know the people that commissioned it. It's heavily modified and heavily naffed up. We tried to get them on board to use our setup (QuakeNet) but to no avail, they thought they'd be better off alone...

The current devs of the system repeatedly say it isn't IRC... And if you heavily alter IRC it isn't IRC any more...

To be fair though, the system would fine until they have a channel with hundreds of thousands of people connecting at once. It goes a bit wobbly then...

It runs on an IRCD. And the modifications to QuakeNet's IRCD are no less significant than what Twitch have done either. Not a huge amount of difference at all, after all you can still connect to it with any IRC client.

Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon. We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Twitch Interactive, Inc., the leading live video platform for gamers. In July, more than 55 million unique visitors viewed more than 15 billion minutes of content on Twitch produced by more than 1 million broadcasters, including individual gamers, pro players, publishers, developers, media outlets, conventions and stadium-filling esports organizations.
The Telegraph look a bit stupid now.
