It was something new in a landscape different to today; we could get updates without scouring PC magazine disks for them and everyone could be added to a friends list and added to a clan match instead of juggling server details over ICQ. They even had little games in Friends in the overlay for the wait whilst two campers sit in the corner for five minutes. That's if it worked, Friends tended to fall over a lot!

Steam brought much needed changes to the gaming world and added to the experience. MS haven't, game sharing is all well and good but what about just lending the disk to a mate like the old system? And you know what drove me away from XBL back to my PC? The incessant adverts and price gouging. I don't pay fees to be bombed with adverts and garbage like over-priced digital avatar bits (no I don't buy or play TF2 anymore either before that gets mentioned). The old blade system was far superior to the junk they foisted upon us in the last two experiences.
I love steam too and was there on day 1 as well. You get the convenience of downloading games without need for discs etc and steam sales but most of my games from steam have drm and you still cant trade used games like console users have had for years. We really have never been able to trade games though which is why we dont notice the lack of ability. Steam isnt bad but I do see the PC gaming sector as more locked down DRM wise then consoles and to me it has been that way for far longer.
Price gouging is an issue on anything but PC tbh, they fear annoying retailers so they dont really compete much but I hope the new generation get steam style sales more often.

    I still have mine.

I also remember, perhaps wrongly, doing the same with my NES.

It is more locked down, as I said it is a different culture. Hence the backlash when MS tried foisting it on Xbox users who like to share games whilst PC users generally don't (well, not in the swap cartridges freely manner at least. Some certainly "share" but they are an often overemphasised minority).

It's also a necessary minority in the case of some games... The amount of times I've had to acquire a "shared" copy because the version I paid for didn't work properly is ridiculous.

It's a tangent but still relevant. Ask yourself, what is Steam doing right that MS are doing wrong? The avatar marketplace is a nice start with their overinflated prices compared to the Steam Marketplace set at community-defined prices.
