The fees debacle also marks a difference between the emerging trends for console DRM and PC which has been around a while. If your PC code is used then it is used, that is it. It won't work without going to the shop or online store and buying another.

Consoles on the other hand want an online pass or a small fee to activate the software in an environment that is already sharing heavy (but not illegally sharing if you give the disk to a friend as you then can't play it until they give it back!). Console DRM smacks of money grabbing instead of product protection which is DRM's supposed purpose.

Which has ALWAYS pissed me off... Like I said, none of the other industries have anything like this. So, how the hell did it get brought in?

Arguments aside, does anyone know how much it's going to retail for in £'s?

Xbox One: Gamerscore, Gamertags Carry Over[/url]]Another burning question is whether or not the next-generation Xbox would be backwards compatible. The answer is that it definitely will not. Xbox One runs on the x86 processor architecture, whereas the Xbox 360 was PowerPC based, meaning that Xbox 360 games simply will not run on Xbox One. Your XBLA purchases and Xbox 360 marketplace content will not be making the jump either. “We care very much about the investment people have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future," a Microsoft rep told Engadget. Just like any other console transition, the support for the previous generation will be around for some time, especially when you consider the installed user base.
Looks like I'm still on course for the PS4..

It's not right I agree and I hope the EU can pull some leverage over an otherwise unregulated wild west industry. But PC gaming doesn't have fees whilst consoles are implementing them to prevent otherwise legal activity. Where PC DRM is protecting software (badly!) the console market is using it as yet another source of revenue. That is considerably less forgivable.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't this "activation fee" illegal under US law's First Sale doctrine? I suspect it will have similar issues with EU law and the right to resell digital goods.

Half of the things these companies do are illegal one way or another... They don't care.

Also, they could [attempt to] pull an Oracle. You still have the right to sell the physical media... You just have to pay to use it.

It renders the second hand copy useless without paying an extra fee, but it doesn't stop people selling it. [Digital on the other hand...]

Five unanswered questions about the Xbox One | Reviews - Games and Gear - CNET Reviews

    My bad, $399 - $499.

    Approx £275 - 375?

No official pricing yet, but values around that mark seem realistic.
