Foxconn using forced student labour to build Sony’s PS4 « Games In Asia

If reports in the Chinese press are to be believed, Sony’s next-gen games console may be being assembled using some very outdated labor practices. According to Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily, thousands of students from an IT engineering program at the Xi’an Institute of Technology are being forced to work at Foxconn’s Yantai plant assembling the Sony Playstation 4. Students have been told if they refuse to participate, they lose six course credits, which effectively means they will not be able to graduate.

Officially, the program is considered an “internship” and it is publicly recognized and promoted by the school. But students have said that once they got to Foxconn, they were assigned to jobs that had no relation whatsoever to their fields of study, including grunt work like distribution and shipping. One student, for example, majored in finance and accounting but has been assigned to a job that entails glueing together parts of Sony’s Playstation 4. Another was assigned to a job that entails peeling of the PS4′s protective plastic and putting stickers on it. Still another, a computer science major, puts the PS4′s various cords and the instruction manual into the console’s box. Moreover, students say that their working hours are exactly the same as regular workers. The only difference is that unlike the workers, the students aren't being paid.
^ At least the students can add volunteer work to their CVs! That always looks good!

Not specific to Sony but also Microsoft, Apple, Google, Dell, Amazon, Cisco and HP among others that use Foxconn.

PS4 will not support media servers, DLNA functionality « Polygon

The PlayStation 4 will not support client functionality for media servers, Sony announced today in the Ultimate FAQ for the console on the PlayStation Blog.

The FAQ also confirms the Sony's next-gen console will not support DLNA devices for sharing and streaming videos and other media content from a home PC. Sony's PlayStation 3 does include DLNA support and allows users to access their PC's media from the console's dashboard.

Earlier this year, Microsoft noted that the Xbox One will not work as a Windows Media Center Extender, which would have allowed users to connect multiple devices running Windows. DLNA support, while possible on the Xbox 360, is still unconfirmed for the Xbox One.
PS4 won't support CD or MP3 playback at launch « Polygon

PlayStation 4 owners will have limited music listening options when the console launches next month, as Sony has confirmed that the next-gen console doesn't support playback of music CDs and MP3s.

Sony suggests that if PS4 owners want to play background music while playing games, they should get a Music Unlimited subscription — apparently their only option, based on a FAQ posted to the PlayStation Blog today. Music Unlimited subscriptions range from $4.99 to $9.99 depending on the number and type of devices subscribers own.

The PS4 will not include a music visualizer like its predecessor.

Some of those features (or lack thereof) may change. On Twitter, president of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said, "Thanks for the feedback to the lack of MP3 and DLNA support at the launch of PS4. I'll share with the PS4 Dev team for future consideration."

You're confident the xboxone is going to have local streaming support?

Xbox had it first for years so I would expect it if the console is any kind of media hub. Obviously the ps4 is not, but you can pay to stream songs you own in true Sony fashion.

Media Extender isn't supported on xboxone. Mr Nelson didn't know if DLNA or MP3 was supported on xboxone. With a couple of weeks to go as head of PR I'd expect him to know. MS have been playing dumb on rumours surrounding contentious issues, 720p because of poor GPU being the main one. From analysis of cross-platform games like BF4 (900p vs 720p) and COD (1080p vs 720p) this has so far turned out to be true. Consoles are for games right?

You may be expecting/assuming too much. Still, at least you'll be able to pay for streaming services too. \o/

    That's the plan.

I wish there was backwards compatibility... there's a few PS3 games I've never played. [Because I dont have a PS3.]

Honestly congrats on winning the PS 4, not jealous at all and you deserved it and won it fair and square

I have a PS 3 but got other stuff to pay etc so won't be for a while until I can get one, by which time it may be a moot point anyway as may be a PS 5 or something else

To people moaning about the 720p and 900p etc

You do know that there is no difference to the human eye between 1080p and 720p. Tests were done on a group of 500 people in London by Toshiba, they had people with glasses, contacts, normal vision etc, played a bluray film (a 5 minute clip) and a clip from a TV show which was filmed and broadcast in full HD, played both at 720p and 1080p. More people thought the 720p was better than 1080p, but then admitted it was a pure guess. So tell me why it matters when the eyes cant detect it?

Then why have they released the Asus and similar 4K HD Screens etc ? Am not debating either way. 720 and 1080p aren't really that different. Although if you have a large screen will you see a bit of difference quality wise between the two ?
