I have been exploring some open source software lately and found quite a few to be very useful for some departments in our school.
has anyone got any open source software that they can recommend and a quick desciption of what it is?

Have you looked at the software on schoolforge
We also use pivot stickfigure animator in the art department.

I've just had a quick glance at this schoolforge website, and it's great, i'll definately look more into it.

We do use, or have used in the recent past:
Pivot stick figure
Freemind mind mapping software
Wink tutorial and presentation creation software
Anim8or 3D modeling and character animation program
Monkeyjam "designed to let you capture images from a webcam, camcorder, or scanner and assemble them as separate frames of an animation"
Scratch animation program
