I have been exploring some open source software lately and found quite a few to be very useful for some departments in our school.
has anyone got any open source software that they can recommend and a quick desciption of what it is?

We also use pivot stickfigure animator in the art department.

Freemind mind mapping software
Wink tutorial and presentation creation software
Cool Timer
CutePDF
Anim8or 3D modeling and character animation program
GameMaker
Monkeyjam "designed to let you capture images from a webcam, camcorder, or scanner and assemble them as separate frames of an animation"
Scratch animation program
