I've rarely had problems with tape - certainly no more so than disc. You do need to buy decent tape, maintain your drive, store and handle them appropriately. You can buy reasonable quality tape at £10 per TB, uncompressed. If you need a lot of capacity for your backup plan (and multi generational tends to eat up the bytes (geddit)), then tape offers reasonable reliability and value. And if a backup plan leaves you relying on one tape, that's not a problem with tape.
