There is a utility in SCCM 2012 [Remote Control] where you can view who is logged on to a station and render assistance to the currently logged on user should it be required:

Hmmm thanks, that may work for one machine but I surely can't do that for whole labs at a time, I'm looking at this PDQ Inventory program and it may be what I end up using.

For managing whole computer rooms at once we were using iTalc on XP. However we found it unreliable at best on Windows 7 and so when we had a network refresh in the summer we elected to use Impero.

Could try Abtutor you can see all computers logged or one lab\room and view and monitor and take control of these if you like also very reasonably priced.

I wrote my own back in the day, web based php that queried active directory to get computer names from a group, then pinged them to see if they were on or not the called a pstools program that retrieved the user name of the current user if there was one. It displayed it all in a nice layout that you could the select the machine and perform various tasks like log off, restart etc, also kill processes like ie if they were doing something you didnt want them to be.

Havent got the code any more but shouldnt be too hard to knock up if you know your way around php, beauty of it is it was web based so could be used from any were or device

We have been using Impero for the past year for live desktop monitoring and remote support. Very good product for this purpose.

Impero works a treat for my school. Highly recommend it.

However, isn't there a cmd that can be run from the DC that tells who is currently logged onto which live computers?
