Deploying Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash and Java by MSI/GPO - Guides

Thought I would leave us all with something nice for the weekend, as some may know I started at a new place last month and the first thing that I thought was 'wow time to do some plugin upgrades'.
This time I decided to make guides as I went along so below are the links to deploy Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash and Java in a nice 'clean' way with no unneeded shortcuts and no auto update prompts.

Deploying Adobe Reader 11 to the Enterprise via GPO | my world of IT
Deploying Flash 11 to the Enterprise via GPO | my world of IT
Deploying Java 7 to the Enterprise via GPO | my world of IT

    Hope this helps someone!

    Hi,

I have recently been looking at same things for Reader, Flash, Shockwave and now Java. I think I pretty much got to the point of creating custom MSI to exclude Java updates etc. I was wondering if you have got over the issue of removing previous versions of Java.

I'm presented with a number of machines with various previous Java installs, I found an excellent batch script to remove previous entries by guid. and then I was going to run the lastest modified MSI after that in a batch file. Just wondering if there's any better ways, as this will have to be a logon script that has some kind of run once lock in place.

Hopefully after I have them standardized I can use the GPO dependacies.

    Thanks for he excellent guides

Java mass removal script can be found at Java J2SE & JRE Mass Uninstallation Script (Bat)

The Java installer will overwrite any previous updates of the same version number (e.g. v7 Update 17 will get rid of v7 Update 15) however I'm afraid I've never looked into doing something where you get rid of say Java v6.

Quick question, upgrading java this way do you carry out the same process to upgrade i.e do you need the the 3 files msi, data achive and the .mst in a separate folder and specify it a upgrade in the GPO also is do you specify its a n over the top upgrade or a remove the old version and install the new version?

    Thanks

Yep same process to upgrade - the GPMC should pick it up as a newer version and when you look in the 'Upgrades' tab the previous version should be listed there.

I just leave the old files still in place (along with the old version) that way if for whatever odd reason you need to revert back (and believe me on occasion you will) its there and ready to go.

Just further to previous my file structure looks like this-

    Code:
    \\UNC Path\GPO-MSI
                                  \Java
                                          \v7-u17
                                          \v7-u23
                                  \Flash
                                          \v11-6
                                          \v11-7
    and so on...

Regarding your recent blog post about Orca, here is a much faster method to download it. The links below are what the Windows SDK web installers use.

Orca v5.0.9200 (included with Windows SDK for Windows 8)

    Code:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/1/3/F1300C9C-A120-4341-90DF-8A52509B23AC/standalonesdk/Installers/Orca-x86_en-us.msi
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/1/3/F1300C9C-A120-4341-90DF-8A52509B23AC/standalonesdk/Installers/a35cd6c9233b6ba3da66eecaa9190436.cab
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/1/3/F1300C9C-A120-4341-90DF-8A52509B23AC/standalonesdk/Installers/fe38b2fd0d440e3c6740b626f51a22fc.cab

Note. Download all three files to the same folder, then run 'Orca-x86_en-us.msi' to install. This MSI is also compatible with Windows 7.
Orca v5.0.7693 (included with Windows SDK for Windows 7)
    Code:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/6/A/A6AC035D-DA3F-4F0C-ADA4-37C8E5D34E3D/setup/WinSDKTools_amd64/cab1.cab

Note. Extract 'WinSDK_Orca_Msi_5E20C107_DAA3_4D49_AFAE_7FB2594F0CDC_amd64' from cab1.cab and rename to Orca.msi
Btw, InstEd is far better than Orca.

I've always preferred Orca - its simple and gets right to the point.

Well, had the chance to release my logon script into the wild this week and seems to work, i'll post up the code next week when i'm back at work for anyone that's interested hopefully future updates will be just a case of using the gpmc upgrade / dependency framework.

I had to use a c:\javaupdate.lck file place hold so that it doesn't process the script multiple times, I'm still new with the whole GPO process so not 100% sure its required, by my approach has always been belt, braces and magic trousers. (Stops leaving your *** hanging in the air. )

Thanks again Jamesfed, its always good to double check and confirm I'm doing things the same way as other people.

Sounds pretty good - I'm sure we all look forwards to seeing the script.

As mentioned here's my GPO startup script for java deployment, from any version to 7u17 (I haven't checked for updates in a couple of weeks) and further versions will be deployed as new GPOs with upgrade/dependacy in GPMC. The install MSI has been modified to remove the java update settings (jretransformed.msi), and machine names will have to change to suit.

I hope this can go towards helping someone else, and I can't claim to have written all the code myself just bringing into a workable solution for myself.

Been testing Java 7 Update 21 using the same setup as in the guides and all seems to be working with no issues.

No uninstall issues? I tried deploying the Java MSI via GPO and it would work on some and bomb on others. What would happen is the uninstall of the previous version would break and wouldn't update after that. The only surefire way I've seen to silently remove Java via script consistently was that VBS script MS put together.
