Have a problem at the moment with emails going in to deleted items and then staying there indefinitely. going in to the database properties and limits it is set to keep for 14 days and don't delete until backup is unchecked. All the mailboxes are using the database policy however the emails will sit in deleted items until they are manually removed. I am not aware if any other policies will disable the database > mailbox policies?

29th January 2013, 12:12 PM #2 Deleted Item Retention in Exchange refers to how long the server will keep items in the database that have been completely deleted by the user, ie deleted from the "Deleted Items" folder or shift-deleted before recovering the space for re-use. It does not affect mail in your Deleted Items folders at all, that it down to the user to manage.
