Ideas to prevent getting lost in caverns in Minecraft.

I was exploring a cave system in Minecraft yesterday and I kept getting lost. I spent an hour stuck in there at one point.

So, does anyone have ideas how to prevent this? Mapping it would be basically impossible, as it went on forever.

    Thoughts?

Been ages since I played Minecraft (back in the beta days) so maybe it's changed now, but at the time you could just dig yourself back up to the surface...

Take a load of signs in? You place them with an arrow pointing the way you came.
    Drop dirt markers
If you are on a multi-player server that supports it there nay be either the home command that you can set at a point to return to or I think the back command takes you to the spawn point or the last place you used the back command.

I normally wander aimlessly until I find a way out.

You can still do that, but when you're approaching bedrock, it makes for a very long journey, and also opens a new hole that I don't want... Plus there's always the change of lava or water falling on my head.

Plus, its still in Beta. '1.5 beta' now.

Hmm. Signs. Good idea. Not like wood is difficult to get hold of either. Think I'll try this.

I build the cavern as I go. Lots of torches, lots of wooden/stone steps. As I dig, I drop torches. After a small stretch, I will go back and place steps so I know where I have been and others can follow.

If you are on our server look for the door marked Deep Excavation under the tower. It's a good example, if it's still there that is. Not been on for ages.

I think F3 brings up your coordinates (amongst a ton of other info). That would give you a rough idea if you knew where you started. However, I'm a signs man. I try to have them at junctions

arrows with torches and like 20 torches around the entrance. The main problem is when you get turned around following tunnels.

The server i play on has warp commands though

I'm not as yet. I'm learning the ropes in single player first, before venturing into multiplayer servers. Whilst watching various youtube videos.

Signs in tunnels would be useful, also dont forget the edugeek server has the home plugin so you can set a home spawn location and type /home to go to it or /home "username" to visit other players home spawns.

3 torches above/around the connection to the cavern you were in, then look for them while doing the headless chicken followed by creepers dance.

I figured this out just the other night. Here's what you do...

Make sure everyone on your server does this or else it won't work properly.

Only ever put candles on the right hand side wall, if you need to put them on the other side of the tunnel then put them on the floor.

this way you can find your way back easily to the top
