Need a help (a lot of it lol)

Hi,

I'm going to sound like a complete fool most likely hear but I've got a problem installing this on to our webserver.

Basically, my line managers son built up a little <edited> webserver for my school to use to host our website, only problem is it's running SuSe Linux and I have not got a clue on how to use it.

I asked him to install MySQL but I don't know any of the details and I don't know how to check for what the details are or how to uninstall it and reinstall it.

I'm connecting to it via PuTTy but I'm not familiar with any of the commands and so on.

Anyone able to help?

OpenSUSE is based on Redhat so it uses their command base for what you want. Also your "sh***y" server would most likely be running apache which is in their package manager under the name of httpd.

To list all installed packages have a look at:

Since you don't know what is operating on the server should probably wipe the server and start afresh to guarantee the security of it.

I'd advise installing Webmin, it makes administrating a linux server a doddle, and its very simple to install.

Check it's not running first by going to http://127.0.0.1:10000, if you don't see webmin, install it!

My vote would be to get the line manager son to download the latest Ubuntu server and install it for you.

Here is the step basically.

1. Download the .iso image (ubuntu v9.10 server)
2. Burn the .iso image to CD using burning software. e.g. nero
3. Boot from the CD on the computer you will be using to run the web site
4. Just during setup, choose "LAMP" server. LAMP stands for Linux Apache Mysql Php and you should have a functioning web server with minimum effort.

You can install webmin and phpmyadmin easily afterwards. You wil have to install OpenSSHserver also in order to use putty to connect to the web server remotely.

The reason I recommend Ubuntu is from personal experience and I have found tons of documentation when I need help.

In a nutshell, Ubuntu can give you a fully functional web server in as little as 15-20 mins depending on the hardware without knowing too much about web servers.
