I don't know if this has been posted, but I was messing with the header image this morning and wondered what would happen if I extended the header image for the full width (950px) of the page. As you can see from the attachment, the menu overlays the image. There don't seem to be any ill effects to the rest of the site when using the menu and image in combination that I can see.
I could do with dropping the menu down a tad though as it sits too close to the title text.
To nudge the menu down a bit edit the suffix.css file and change

margin-top:100px;

width:auto;
}
Play around with the value until it fits.
