It's probably staring me in the face but I can't figure out the best way to add Word Docs PDF's etc to our Joomla site. Whats the best way?
I use an extension called RubberDoc to manage my documents. I know there is another called DocMan. Worth taking a look.

ah, interesting...
I've been doing it the hard way by the looks of it and uploading the pdf into the media folder and then linking them from there...

I use DocMan with a tinyMCE (i think) plugin to allow links to DocMan categories & files. You can either use the builtin uploader or copy/ftp the file to the DocMan storage folder. Only found 2 negatives. The storage folder can not have folders in so you end up with a mass of files with everything organised in the web end by DocMan. 2nd is that you can only specify one overall sort criteria, not by category. So currently everything is sorted by added date so our policies are randomly ordered.
beyond that it does everything we need.

Thanks for the answers so far folks.
Any chance of a muppet guide as to what it is that the 3 programmes mentioned actually do and a simple guide to how to install and use please?
I 2nd Phoca Download, I'll also suggest throwing the dev a fiver and asking for the xml upgrade to take away "powered by phoca" It can be done yourself but it's a decent com anyway.
All the things mentioned are joomla components, You install them as a component from the Joomla admin and it adds functionality to the CMS. Phoca and docman can be used to create categories and and download areas for different docs or files. Have a stab with them on a development site if you're unsure.

OK so I'm currently trying to upload DocMan to my site. Reading the Readme I see I need to change the write permissions.
So going to Help / System Info / Directory Permissions I see the Plug In / System and all others listed as unwritable. Where do I need to go to enable this please?
Thanks for your patience all that realise I'm a tad slow![]()
Are you going through install in the admin section or doing it via ftp?
I was on the install admin section. Oddly all the folders list with unwritable.
If you're on 1.5 you can enable the FTP layer, if not you can change the folders permissions via FTP or a hosting Cpanel whilst you install, just remember to change them back afterwards!

Thanks for this useful thread - I have installed the Phoca Download component - how would I now link an image in article, for example, to a newsletter that I uploaded to my website with phoca?
Thanks in advance...

Have you created a link in a menu to the phoca download com?? If so go to the section where you have your newsletters and copy the link of the newsletter. Then just link the picture using that address
