hosting company help

Hi I am trying to get together a Joomla site. I ont really deal in web stuff so I am doing this from scratch largely.
I renewed our domain and web hosting package recently from a reseller who were fronting for Tollon who are the actual hosts. I wish I had more time to research the options but at the time I was happy to keep the site ticking over as it was.

But now we want to revamp the site with Joomla. I would rather leave the old site up and running while we tinker with the new one. I believe that the old site uses MySQL

So to avoid breaking the old site do I need to create a new database that is separate from the old one? That way I dont overwrite whats in it, or can the two websites share the existing database. I would have thought a new instance would have been better

Also the reseller is asking £60 per year for a 50mb database and £90 for a 100mb How does this sound to you? sounds a lot for a few mouse clicks and an email. Also doesn't sound like a lot of space for a database. I am getting really frustrated that any tech help comes from the reseller who have aguy there that seems to less than me and is just relaying my queries to Tollon which through Chinese whispers often ends up not answering my query when it gets back to me. I dont want to be throwing good money after bad i possible whats you thoughts?

That sounds stupidly expensive. My friends company does unlimited webspace, unlimited traffic, unlimited emails, unlimited databases etc etc for £40 per year.

Does not matter the size of the database or anything, he will host it and have 100% uptime. I have had my site with him since May, its never been down, he has been there to help me out alot and I cant fault his service.

This is nothing against your mates company nephilim its just a major bug bear of mine the way hosting companies advertise unlimited webspace/bandwidth etc, plenty of them do it but its just plain not true I mean how can you have unlimited webspace surely there is only a certain amount of storage on the planet at some piont you will hit a limit?

Maybe its just me?

This isnt anything against that company... but the pages where you submit sensitive data isnt secure (isnt https), plus he only accepts payments through paypal. I wouldnt recommend something like that for a school (not to mention that most schools *cant* use paypal anyway?).

Try 1&1, 123-reg, UK2. All 3 companys are well established, will allow correct invoicing for businesses/schools and all have dedicated data centers. They arnt going anywhere anytime soon.

Not to mention, they arnt that expensive!

Thats fair enough, its just putting it out there! Some schools can and do use paypal as they get items from Ebay. Otherwise yes, do go with 1and1 or 123-reg. They offer good packages.

I believe he is a reseller, but I never said he wasnt. I do not wish to turn this thread into a bitch about lutonwebs, I merely suggested it as some schools can use paypal. As soon as it was pointed out that not all schools do, I recommended 1and1 and 123-reg.

I saw a recomend for Fuzioned on another site. I Gave them a ring seem seem nice enough and knowlegable, ticks all the boxes that I can see at a reasonable price. Fuzioned
