Could any of you tell me how I can get the top menu work/act like the menu system in the administration panel? I.e you hover over the menu and it expands to show all options et cetera?

Theres a few extensions/modules/plugins for doing it. Suckerfish is the one your after IIRC.

That ones quite good if your ok with creating CSS classes.

Take a look at Extended Menu

The other option is to code something like suckerfish, moomenu into your template.
