For some reason, the demo data isn't loading when I install. I wind up with a blank database. No errors are reported when creating the database.

I just tried installing the latest 1.5.3 package on my local machine and it installed the dummy content OK.
Did you click on the install sample content button? (Its not in the linear flow of the install and can be missed if just clicking on next next etc )
regards
Simon
PS WHen I did click on it - it gave an warning about XML data but still seemed to work.
Yes, I tried install sample data and got the Joomla sample data and not the Edugeek sample data. I tried renaming the joomla.sql file which seems to contain the Edugeek sample data, then I got an XML error but still no content.

I'm not a home now so can't check what content actually got loaded - I'll check later on.

Its fine with my local eg153 install - content is edugeek stuff.
Are you installing on a local test setup or a remote site?
Any chance your FTP upload didn't quite go 100%.

Simon
My local 153 install is fine as well. I'm using XAMPP on Windows XP Home.
All the best,
Dave
It's a remote site that I'm using for testing!
I haven't rerun the FTP transfer to check, but everything appears to be present and I had no error messages on upload.
I did rerun the installer and still encountered the same problem.
I tried to import the SQL data from joomla.sql using PHPMyAdmin and got an error #1193 - Unknown system variable 'SQL_MODE'
I'm going to wipe everything and start over.
Any chance the download is incomplete? I downloaded a version on Thursday or Friday that was completely missing the Administrator directory!

Okay, sorry... I should have added that I did download another copy last night that had the administrator directory, etc., uploaded it, and still had the problem.
In any event, I'm downloading another fresh copy, wiping the files, folders, and database, uploading a new copy, and running the installer again.
you dont need to import the joomla.sql file it will do it for you when you install if you do you need to change the #_ to jos_ and then create the config file manualy.
Thanks for that clarification.
To be clear, when installing should I click the button to install the sample data? That is to say, is the sample data the Joomla sample data or the Edugeek sample data?
Still no joy!
I wiped the database, files and folders, redownloaded the installation package, and uploaded it. Clicking the install sample data button during installation works perfectly and gives me Joomla sample data.
I tried populating mySQL with Edugeek data, first changing the table names from #__ to jos__.
First, I got this error...
So I removed that line. Now I get this error...MySQL said:
#1193 - Unknown system variable 'SQL_MODE'
So I'm wondering if this is a mySQL/PHPMyAdmin version issue.MySQL said:
#1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 AUTO_INCREMENT=1' at line 50
According to the joomla.sql file...
My server reports...-- phpMyAdmin SQL Dump
-- version 2.11.5
-- http://www.phpmyadmin.net
--
-- Host: localhost
-- Generation Time: May 28, 2008 at 09:57 PM
-- Server version: 5.0.51
-- PHP Version: 5.2.5
-- phpMyAdmin SQL Dump
-- version 2.6.0-pl2
-- http://www.phpmyadmin.net
--
-- Host: bahula.ca
-- Generation Time: Jun 02, 2008 at 04:15 PM
-- Server version: 4.0.26
-- PHP Version: 4.4.4
FWIW, after removing the DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 throughout the joomla.sql file it worked properly. It appears that I'm up and running now.
Where can I find a link for 153? Thanks
