SYSMAN_MK thanks for that I am nearly there now, just one snag the links are not appearing on the sub menu I don't know if I have missed something. I have attached a picture to show you.

Yeah complicated that one. Takes ages of searching around and becoming familiar with the way joomla works.
Those submenu's are in modules > site modules, then in the content > content by section submenu items you need a link created to the submenu. Back to the module > site module, your submenu needs a link in pages/items - indicated by the one's highlighted in blue.
That sounds horribly complex, but it's easy once you get into it. U prolly doin most of the above, but missed out a bit. Hope U can work it out anyway.. I know Joomla can be frustrating like that.
