I just noticed a news article at Valve announces Steam for Schools, helps teachers create educational Portal 2 levels -- Engadget which may offer some entertainment if not educational value.
In brief... education gets Portal 2 and the level editor to teach spatial awareness and stuff. There's lesson plans and things too so that teachers don't have to work too hard.

Signed up for 15 accounts. Downloaded steam, installed, and oh wait, LGfL blocks the ports we need. Failed at the first hurdle.
Do you think it'll work here on the SWGFL? I don't think they block outbound ports 27014 and 27050. Making it work with a proxy is tricker?

Installed silently / automatically, or manually? Steam for Education doesn't seem very amenable to being installed via a script, even an AutoIT script - it presents its own non-standard GUI that can't be fed with keypresses to associate a particular machine with a particular Steam account.Quote:

Hey guys
Just thought you should know that we have successfully unblocked the steam ports on SWGfL. SWGfL by all accounts have been in contact with valve and have come up with a way.
As for proxy problems if you use -tcp as a switch when opening the program (add this to the shortcut) then the client will only use tcp ports. Also if you have an ISA server just use the firewall client. When using the ISA client the steam client will connect as long as you have opened up the right ports in ISA.

If you add "-tcp" to the Steam command line, then the only ports you need open besides 80 are outbound connections to TCP 27014 to 27050 inclusive.
