CMIS

We are about to have CMIS installed in the school. We are currently running Sim.net. I am looking for some feedback about CMIS. The serco engineer is coming in to set up the server. I have not spoken to anyone yet all decisions have been made by SLT.

Once it is installed on server whats the procedure for installing to workstations. Do you have to manually visit them? Is there a a .msi install that does it all.?

Any feedback will be welcome as i am completely in the dark.

I would *seriously* recommend you go and visit a school that has made the move and talk to the Techies .. not Manglement.

When I was helping with it at the last place of work it was a manual install and it took several workarounds to transfer the data across ... but that was a while ago and I know there have been more recent developments.

Unity College in Northampton might be a good place to chat to but I am sure there are some that are closer to you. (not sure whether Kev has signed up for edugeek either ... )

I used CMIS at the last school I was at. ARRGHHH I hated it! No end of problems. Looks good when demonstrated though! I took a new job, partly to get away from CMIS.

We run CMIS here, and to be honest, its not the best but its better then SIMs ever was. for the workstation "installations", we just have a drive mapped and copy a shortcut and a connection file down (as instructed by LandCiT) and thats all there is to it. runs off of a SQL server (nearly 2GB in memory currently, so i hope u got a beefy SQL server) and ePortal is a real nice touch.

To be honest, you need to see it running on a network somewhere.

We run CMIS too - no workstation end installs, and the upgrades are orders of magnitude simpler than SIMS. It has its quirks - but as stated - ePortal is pretty cool - especially in its latest version.
