    SMART Notebook v11 deployment issues

Has anyone else run into issues deploying this via the MSI and MST created with the SMART Installer tool? From GPO or manually kicking off the MSI everything appears to go ok until the end when it just says the installation was interrupted and nothing is installed. No obvious (useful) errors in logs. Running the downloadable exe installs fine. SMART technical support not very helpful so far apart from different people asking the same inane questions.

Have you got Flash 11 installed, it's one of the prerequisites.
I think the .exe will do it for you, but the MSI won't.

Oh god - not another version with install issues

This is one of reasons I'm still running 9.7 at most of my schools

What "brilliant features" has 11 got then?

I had troubles just running the msi manually. First it didn't ask for UAC, had to run from cmd line, then it failed to install, missing files or something, wouldn't bother with it for another 6 months, usual quality.

To be honest Smart Notebook is becoming just as big as MS Office, which is why I included both as part of an image. It's much easier and quicker this way.

I'm still running Smart Notebook 10.8 at all sites, but will certainly look at Smart Notebook 11 once they've ironed out the bugs!

Adobe Flash Player 11.1 or later
Windows Media Player 9 or later (required for SMART Recorder)
Microsoft DirectX technology 8.1 or later (required for SMART Video Player)
DirectX 9-compatible graphics hardware for SMART Notebook 3D Tools
    Smart Notebook 10.8 requirements:

    Pentium IV processor or higher
512 MB of RAM (1 GB recommended)
2 GB of free hard disk space
Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP2 or Windows 7 operating system
Internet Explorer Internet browser 6.0 or later
    Adobe Flash Player 10
Microsoft DirectX technology 8.1 or later (required for SMART Video Player)
Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 or later
The requirements of 11 certainly are higher and yes, you probably do need .NET 4 too.

Just to confirm, you do need the .NET 4 Client profile installed at the very least. I'd recommend the .NET 4 Full is installed, as this includes all components. SIMS.net requires .NET 4 Full, as well as other applications too.

Testing on a new Win 7 x64 build with just Office 2010, .NET4 and VS2010 tools. This is in a virtual environment (hyper-v) at the moment before rolling it out to physical machines once working properly. Flash v11 is installed via GPO too and before the SMART Notebook v11 GPO.

Out of interest, if the OS is x64 and Office 2010 is x86, what version of VS 2010 runtime tools should be installed?

If I remember right there is a folder with the MSI which contains the language installers. Make sure you have that with the MSI when you deploy it. I have this problem with 10.8 and found just having the MSI gave the above error. Soon as I copied the folder next to the MSI it was fine.

Genius! There is a support folder with a languages folder containing the language MSIs. Putting the Support folder with the MSI and MST solved the issue. Thank you! Didn't have to do this with v10.6.

Same, that's what got me with 10.8, computers with 10.6 already installed would install 10.8 fine but not new ones. Then found putting that support folder with the MSI in the deployment folder solved it.

I've just tried to install it on an XP machine with Sp3 on and it fails with the error message that it requires a newer version of Windows Installer. It doesn't say which one, so I'm assuming 4.5.

I installed this version and the installation went through with no problems. The documentation doesn't mention this directly in the Notebook docs. It does mention it in the Ink docs and says that the installer is in the Support folder in the Education Installer files. It isn't.

Win installer 4.5 isn't pushed out through WSUS and isn't going to be. The 4.5 installer for XP is an exe and can't be deployed through Gpol.

So 11 is nixed for XP. Unless someone can be bothered to find a workround, which, frankly, I cant.

Good old Smart, when will they learn?

*edit* I should mention that we are done with XP but I still have a fair few teacher laptops that are using it. These will be gone as soon as we can afford it, but until then....
