If you silently install VLC using their EXE installer, by default it will install browser plug-ins for IE & Firefox, dump a shortcut on your desktop and associate itself with almost all audio, video and playlist filetypes. Some people do not like that.

Wow, I had no idea the new version was that messy, what does it think it is, Skype?

    even old versions did that

my main issue with scripted vlc is upgrades its a pita as you have to version check to silent uninstall then redo removing an msi is easier

Ah, yea never bothered with the silent install as a repacked MSI has always been easier to customise and push to exactly where it was needed.

I don't know about you, but I hate installers which do not give you complete control over the installation (must be a form of OCD ). I don't want the hassle of tidying up after them or figuring out how to disable auto-updaters.

Out of the six shortcuts the VLC installer creates on the Start Menu, five of them are irrelevant in a school environment and only serve to confuse (teachers) or entice (students) to mess about.

So you haven't heard of Redirected Start Menu's and Desktops then?

We use redirected Start Menu's/desktops. I was thinking about the schools that don't when I wrote that. e.g. SimpleSi's.

Even if you do, why make a mess you don't need to

Great that you have created a package for VLC 2+. I am dying to try it out. Sending a PM now!
