We VNC Con (old i know) to monitor kids screens. It does what we want and we also have a reg key that stops the kids right clicking and choosing 'kill client' so they can't turn us off. But on some not all of our machines the icon is there and goes black when you connect so the kids know and instantly shut the windows down of games etc.
Is there a hack/patch we can use to stop the icon appearing at all?
Its weird because it appears on nearly all our computers but not all.

I think there's a regkey that the VNC server will look at to completely hide the tray icon.

Hmm.. it seems to depend on which version of VNC server you're running. For TightVNC, it's HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3 -
"DisableTrayIcon"=dword:00000001.
