Live@edu Outlook
Hello all,
I am interested in my school going on to Microsoft's free email service. We are a RM CC3 school and we use RM Easymail.
I contacted RM to find out if the school owns the email address. This is what I sent -
"Hello,
We use RM Easymail and I was wondering if you could tell me whether the domain @mail.heywood.gloucs.sch.uk was brought and is now owned by Heywood Community School or if this is still owned by RM/SWGFL?"
This was RM's reply -
"Hi Sean,
I can confirm that RM own the DNS and Heywood own the domain.
Regards"
I am a bit confused about this does this mean I can use live@edu or not. Are there any other schools who have gone from easymail to Microsoft and what did you have to do to do this?
Thanks

15th February 2011, 11:22 AM #2 Yes you can use Live@edu, just ask RM to make the dns change to your MX record.
A DNS change only takes 20mins these days once they actually action it.
We just registered a new domain ourselves as I wanted to run the new system in parallel for a bit. It also means we have a nice short email address now.

15th February 2011, 11:22 AM #3 RM are providing the dns services for your domain.
In order to use live@edu you need them to change the mx record for your domain to point to the live@edu service.
The web hosting i.e your website can stay where it is.

Thanks for the reply's. If i start the ball rolling and enrol with live@edu I will still be able to use RM Easymail won't I? I want to be able to migrate a couple of staff and some students to see how it goes before I do a mass migration. I still want the rest of the staff to use Easymail until I am ready.
Thanks again

15th February 2011, 02:10 PM #5 If you keep the same domain name then you need to do it all in one go.
As I said earlier we registered a new domain for 20 quid and moved all email users onto that.

15th February 2011, 02:26 PM #8 Sorry can't be done without switching from one system to the other now if easymail was an exchange based system then it would have been possible to switch to live@edu then migrate the data using their tools but it's not.

Oh right. Ah well if we decide to go with it, it will have to be done over a holiday or weekend or something. Im trying to do as much research as possible then I will put this forward to SLT. But as its a free service compared to paying for RM Easymail plus loads of other benefits. A no brainer really!! Thanks for all your help, much appreciated.
