    Smart Learning ICT

Cant get it to run from a UNC, requires a mapped drive, assign the drive and try again, cant get it to run.

So off I toddle to the support site and -

Problem: Cannot install the SL Server to a network drive
    Deployment: network, all types
    Operating System: any
Solution: Installation of the SL Server must be to a physical, local drive on the server or pseudo server computer. The installation directory can then be mapped to a network drive letter as appropriate. This is stated clearly in the user manual.
So I read the manual, again, and see this -

Note: Make sure you install the network application onto a local drive which users on the network can access.
Am I being really dense or are they telling me to make a new share on one of my drives just to get this to run?

I have already installed it to a share which gets mapped as a drive, are they saying that it needs its own drive letter to run?

We have this, can't remember exactly how we have it setup. I think we may have setup a share on the server, but I will check first thing tomorrow.

Yeh same here we've used it for a few years and everyone hates it!

I hate it, the teachers hate it, even the kids hate it!

If i remember rightly I installed it to the network on its own share (didnt assign a letter to it tho) but then gave everyone full access rights to the share and everything in it.

Its a pain and the teacher's hate inputting the kids names at the beginning of every year but hell will freeze over before i do it. We dont move the kids up each year either cause they have usually messed the whole thing up by the end of the year so its easier to get the to recreate it!

    I hate it!

The trick it to install in on the severs local drive via the server, not from a client. So stick CD into CD Drive of apps server, install locally to the shared apps folder (eg e:\apps)

Then you should be able to create shortcuts on the clients

Ah yes you must be installing it actually on the server from the servers DVD drive if your trying to install it over the network then it wont work.

As said before installed locally on a server and shared. But I can't stress how much I hate this program. It is evil!

    Talking

We used Smart Learning for years, the odd few teachers liked it, most hated it. The best part is the odd few activities that cannot be completed.

Had many problems from connection problems to corrupt databases. SL doesnt like transfering whole classes at end of the school year, i had to restart the database from a blank one virutally every year!

SL promised me a patch to fix most of the issues and even claimed that they employed an Amercian company to assist them in fixing the issues. That was about 3 years ago now, guess what, no patch still!

Either way, installed a new curriculum server and my school went completely to wireless laptops from year 3 onwards and i kind of, accidentially misplaced the SL disks, ooops! Honest it was an accident guv!

Have not used it in well over 18 months and is now LONG forgotten thank god!

I have listed it on the unapproved software list in my school so it stops them buying it again in the future!
