Hi everyone i emailed sentinel about ranger 5 and windows vista and this is the response from them.
"Due to the significant changes to the desktop security model in Windows
Vista some components of Ranger 5 have been affected. We are testing
and developing a new version of Ranger for Networks that will support
Vista. We are not expecting our customers to adopt Vista straight away,
as typically schools wait for the release of the first service pack. Our
expectations are to release the new product in 2008."
shame i was going to test vista in 1 room.Looks like i cant do anything now till 2008!!!!!

That's a bit poor!
So you need to wait over a year before you can upgrade the OS on any of your machines? In the meantime, teachers demand X, Y and Z that requires Vista and you have to tell them that they can't have it because the security product that you pay £££££s for each year doesn't supoort it yet!

Careful there Ric, Vista doesn't work to great with Citrix either now does it.

Surely you can still add Non-Ranger PCs to a network which had Ranger on it. You just have to manage the non-ranger PCs differently.

@Geoff: The client runs fine on Vista :P
I can't see Citrix telling its customers that they won't support the next version of the server OS until a year after its release either!

You might want to check up on the effect of Vista clients on the CPU usage of the server.

You can use netsupport, that fully supports vista and you can view netsupport clients in ranger and vice versa

BECTA also recomends that we wait until Vista becomes more stable..
What programs require Vista that the teacers could ask for ?

Yes but you got to be daft to adopt an OS that's just been released into product. I agree with what they have said regarding the SP1 level. usually by SP1 the product has matured enough for adoption.
Citrix or other companies are still working on full compatibility with Vista and this will be true for many software and with updates the problems can be ironed out.
What i don't understand is why is there such a rush to migrate to Vista, what's wrong with XP and Windows 2003 combo. What is it that XP can't do that vista can give the requirements of schools, again lots of discussion on this topic but less answers.
Becta for once has got it right about advising schools to wait. However this does not mean that schools should not purchase workstation without vista license or prepare for vista or test vista for that matter. A lot of people will be testing vista and finding out how best to incoporate the new OS into their organisations but many won't be interested to have fully working vista workstation in production.

I agree.. there was a poll on this site a few month back and over 84% voted that Vista offers nothing more than XP for their schools needs.... and they have no Vista onsite..
Now there seems this rush towards Vista... just because a few teachers thinks it looks pretty and then slags off the IT department for not being up to date...
Why are we rusing towards Vista when most of the PC's in our schools cannot handle Vista any way...
Because it's new an pretty... .. no no don't stare into the lights...
anyway...I was at least hoping to wait untill the Christmas holidays before rolling out any Vista.. :-(... but it looks like I have to run with the herd

Which i couldn't get to work... Ranger Network is what i'm waiting for
Although i'm in no rush to have any vista machines on the network it would be nice to have a handful for comparisons.
