Default screen capture software

I'm sure there was a thread posted about screen capture software, but I can't find it. Does anyone know of any, preferably free, screen capture software along the lines of camtasia?

Also, don't forget the free CamStudio. It does full video recording to AVI, and includes a Flash converter. Unlike Wink though, it doesn't support annotations.

It does but it's very clunky.

Basically you prepare the the text boxes beforehand then use keyboard shortuts do display them during recording.

Well it is freeware.

Yeah it looks like you have to spend some money if you want to capture anything featuring DirectX

Windows Media Encoder works too (unless you use a decent OS).
