Hi Everyone,
just finished spending all day restoring the SIMS server so I thought I document what i did in case it helps someone else.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We're using Windows 2003, Symantec Backup Exec, SIMS, SQL Server 2005.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Without going into to the cause the old VM would still boot but the database had it, so i decided to disconnect the NIC from it and build a new VM, meaning if the backup wouldn't restore I still had the broken server maybe to ring crapita etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Build new VM, Create disk configuration as before C: drive 50gb, e: drive 150gb.
Installed :
Windows 2003 Server
Service Pack 2
Remote Agent for Backup Exec
Formatted e: drive
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Restored E: drive first.
Restored C: drive.
Re-installed Backup Exec agent, reset IP configuration.
Restored System State and Shadow Copy Components
Re-installed Backup Exec agent, reset IP configuration.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Went to SIMS SQL data directory renamed master.mdf mastlog.ldf model.mdf modellog.ldf
renamed master$4idr to master.mdf
mastlog$4idr to mastlog.ldf
model$4idr to model.mdf
modellog$4idr to modellog.ldf
cleared all archive and readonly bits.
started SQL server ( make sure you have the right instance if you went through the SIMS migration a few years ago)
Run backup job to restore all databases apart from master,
Settings -> Leave database ready to use
Overwrite existing database
Take database offline
Let it run
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And we had SIMS back, made a ghost of straight away.
hope this helps someone.
