Hi all,
We are currently in the middle of setting up a brand new network here and one of the things that we need to carry over is Successmaker.
Naturally, we want to use Server 2k8 - but, after sending a fax to RM last night, they say that only 2k3 is supported.
Are any of you using Successmaker on 2k8, how do you find it (if it works!) or do you know of any other alternatives as we really do not want to go down the route of installng a 2k3 vm unless we really have to..
Many thanks,
Rh91uk

14th August 2009, 11:26 AM #2 I tried unsuccessfully for 6 months to try to get it on there, however in the end I had to virtualise a server 2003 install and it worked ok for a little while, but it takes alot of configuring.

Surely it doesn't matter too much if the VM only does sucessmaker?
Are you moving your current config and everything over?

Well we would of liked to go to a standard 2k8 domain really without any 2k3 boxes at all as it is the future.
Yeah we'll be moving everything over.

2008 R2 surely?
Got any tips?? We still have our RM network and I need to move sucessmaker at some point too. Its the last things on a 6 year old DC, which can be decommissioned when its done!

Oh good luck with that, we';re doing similar things (not RM though) here.
No tips as of yet, hopefully doing it over the weekend. Will let you know how it goes!

Successmaker
I am a netware man but the principle is the same. We are in the process of consolidating primary school servers over 2mb circuits and Successmaker was a problem.
We resolved it by
1 Creating a local directory called "localsuccess" on each pc
2 Copy all the curricullum question bank etc from the networked drive ie the entire "cai" and successmaker directory (approx 4gb) less the database, backup etc. (takes a while!!)
3 In place of the Mapped drive in the login script use the "subst" command to substitute the localsuccess directory for the previous network share. ie subst m: C:\localsuccess M now points to the C: drive and fools SSM.
4 Point all ODBC drivers to the new database
5 Mount the new database on the new server
All questions are now constructed locally and only the database pointers traverse the LAN or WAN. This significantly improves local performance. The only downside is an increase of 4gb in the local image.
The database traffic is minimal with this configuration.
I am not sure if MS have a problem with the version of database or what but sybase will happily run on most variants of linux which may be an alternative but free route to follow.
I am not sure if this is of any help but SSM is a bit of a pain. The best of luck!!

18th August 2009, 07:32 PM #9 We resolved it by
1 Setting up a VM Box on Server 2008 R2
2 Install Windows Server 2003 R2 on the VM box and set it up as its own domain.
3 Install Successmaker on said VM Box
4 Subst the old mapped drive with the new mapped drive on the VM box
5 Point all ODBC drivers to the new database
6 Mount the new database on the new server
