Right I've got Cubase SE3 to install on 16 music room pc's in the next couple of weeks had a quick look in one of the boxes and see there is a usb dongle in there.
If I image one pc with the software installed will it just be a case of plugging a dongle into each machine or does it only work with the first dongle plugged in?
Cheers,
Ben

You can install it on the base image (along with all the patches from Steinberg). You then need to insert each dongle into one machine to intialise them I believe. Once this is done, take one dongle and go round the room so that it can be installed as a new device when first plugged in (I assume you don't give admin rights to your lusers!).

I've got to install this as well on 12 music PC's.
We were planiing to put it on one PC and RIS the image to all theothers?
SO Ric_ you reckon this can be done and th eonly thing you need to do then is what you mentioned above?

That was what I was thinking I'd need to do just wanted to check if anyone else had done it.
I've previously had SX2 on 2 machines and I cable tied the dongles to the back of them but I was thinking about getting some usb extension leads to plug these one inside and cable tie them to the internals of the case.
Also got 2 copies of SX3 coming.

Sorry to confuse this a little bit, we will probably be getting Cubase (latest version) fairly soon, I would be using it on ~10 PCs (maybe a few more if required for offices etc) but can somebody just enlighten a bit more about this dongle please? I have enough problems with leads being stolen without worrying about dongles going missing, is it just a once use dongle to authorise the machine or is it a lifetime thing such as Autocad back a few years ago?

I am under the impression that the software will not operate without the dongle in place have never removed it from the 2 SX2 machines we currently have.
Will have a look monday.

Thanks that would be great, I wonder if they do a licencing server (such as the horrid FlexLM) that we could use instead of dongles or have a built in one like Sibelius does (for the network edition). Cable ties etc through them wouldn't work for me, but if I made the machiens for the job I could put the usb stick inside the machine on a rear plate thats not made for the rear perhapse. I think I may have to investigate well before its purchased

I know the feeling, staff want what they know and not necessarily whats best for the students. I consider it my duty to inform staff of technological advances -esp where it saves money and allows the kids use the software at home whithout the worry of licensing !

Thing is though SE3 hasn't really cost us anything either as it was paid for by elc's
Some of those others look good though especially ardour and I'll probably be installing audacity as well as it's a nice simple sound editor.

To clarify for a couple of floks above...
* The dongle is a purple USB affair
* Without the donlge, you cannot use the software
* I used RIS to deploy my machines without issue
