What's 3 feet long, red and pointed at one end?

Q:What's 3 feet long, red, pointed at one end, looks cool but doesn't work?

A: the "Oracle" rocket, containing a small video camera, the science dept have bought.

I've installed the software on 2 XP laptops now, but on both it fails when connected as an "unrecognisable USB device", and the software they provide with it "can't find a video capture device".

Has anyone else seen one / had problems with one??
have we got a faulty one?

Did you install the software/drivers before or after plugging it in for the first time?

I did, and that seemed to go fine; then when I plugged it in, the trouble started.

I wonder if a linux box would find it... its probably a pretty bog standard webcam chip and it would save mucking about with naff windows USB drivers. Maybe worth a tickle?

As it happens I've got a ubuntu box doing nothing (just dipping my toe in the water and having a play when I had a spare 5 mins)... never thought of that!

You mean just plug it in and see what happens? or do I need to do something else first?

How much did it cost? There's an improved version out and this is something my physics and tech dept would probably enjoy playing with.

    That was the general suggestion...

One of the linux video capture programs might show something up... not sure what sorta kit this is supposed to be.

Edit: VLC might be a good mark for this

Edit 2: looks more likely to be a standard usb mass storage, or set up like a digital camera. Try digikam also.

Thanks for the suggestions - I got round to trying it this morning.

Ubuntu succeded where windows failed as in it detects it as a device that contains photos, and suggests a program for opening it up, but gets no further. The properties page shows 0 free space and 0 space used.

    Methinks it's goosed

btw, our science-teaching Head fired it yesterday anyway, even without the camera working, just for a laugh
