    Computer mapping software

    Hello all,

I would like to use some software that is capable of creating a map of the computers we have at our school. Ideally it would be stuctured so I could draw an outline of the buildings and then assign computers to the rooms in these buildings. I would like to be able to distiguish between models and also between the different VLANS the computers are on.

Later it would be great if we could add other items such as switches, printers and scanners etc....

Has anyone ever seen such a package?

im just checkign out "the dude" (first result on google was from the big lebowski haha) and it looks awesome.

It does mapping so to speak but i dont think its a 3com network director type product. It is however a realtime system uptime monitor aswell. And it seems to kick ass - ive just got it running on my home network now and it does quite alot and pretty well (so far anyway).

Ive very happy i read this post so i could read Mattx's suggestion! Thanks Mattx i smell i "thank" on the horizon.

Looks good. The problem may be however the firewall we use? I will need to look into it and see what we can do.

I was sort of "hoping" that their might be some software that does not require network connectivity?

That way, I could simply draw in everything I need.

@rrichmond: I think that mattx assumed you were as lazy as the rest of us and didn't want to draw the thing yourself

For a more 'manual' method of doing this, I recommend Dia (open source and found at Dia - GNOME Live! ) or Visio (if you have oodles of cash to spend).

I ended up using yEd Graph Editor.
    yWorks - Downloads

Simple and easy to use. Just what the doctor ordered!
