I do think though it would be good to a get a dialogue going with some of the major players.
Agreed. Would be great if we could bring some "pressure" on software vendors to provide their software in MSI format to could be easily customised and deployed.

    @CyberNerd
Not all the Web based packages are that wonderful. We have Heinemann's Language packages that run under the "Harcourt Management Platform" They are a pig to administer, you need to upload a new list of users each year as they can't roll on!!! and kids can't study more than one language at a time!!! Not bad as we are a Language College!!!. They all need to get their act together and we just might be the catalyst.

I have just banned Nelson Thornes software at work, a blanked ban until they can prove better support and make things work better for me without hrs of modification. We have the same policy on Sherston. I know its harsh, but works and saves hrs of time that we have not got to spare.

    OK then....

Seems as if there is a consensus that we need to start a dialogue with the developers of Educational Software. The question is how to go about it.

One way might be to get together our requirements, don't forget we don't all use MSI to install software (yet!) and there must be a fair range of environments out there, then put together an agreed document that can either be sent individually from all participating schools to the say Head of Development or from EDUGEEK as a forum (or both).

Perhaps the Edugeek staff can advise if we should post to this or another thread or to another place on the site. After a few weeks we can then put a document together an post it for comment/amendment. Then light the blue touch paper and stand well back......... 8)

    1) buy macromedia studio suite
    2) blatantly plagarise lots of educational software as flash movies
    3) distribute
    4) profit

It was a question, not a statement.

    Re: Nelson Thornes science software

Fully agree, I won't have Shearston software at our place, as the leaflets come into school I file them under 'B'.
I've got a few packages from a couple of suppliers that teachers have bought in the past that simply lay in the cupboard unused, if they are going to buy them why the h*** don't they get them on appro.

Great idea to get something together to tackle this prob.

    BR to all

    Re: Nelson Thornes science software

I too have spent hours and hours trying to get Birchfield, Nelson Thornes and Sherston software to package and install nicely.

They are an utter pain in the proverbial and unfortunately all of the teachers here just buy the stuff and then write their syllabuses round them.

Only yesterday Birchfield history software appeared on my keyboard waiting to be installed, to which I sighed inside.....

If only I had the power to implement such a plan. As it happens, this software seemed to do a server install very easily, despite being about 2GB in size!

    Re: Nelson Thornes science software

We were having the same problem with the science software freezing at the Nelson Thorn screen. Solution was to uninstall all versions of Java and only install the version that comes on the CD's.
