Re: Anyone here use Faronics Deepfreeze

We use Deep Freeze enterprise on about 45 XP machines.
It has saved us so many problems over the past year. We have had a few small technical problems with it (such as workstation not communicating with console), but tech support has always been able to help us out quickly.

I cannot recommend this product enough. We had tried DriveShield awhile back, but it worked terribly for us.

With Deep Freeze, the only problem we have had is trying to retrain all the staff to not save on Drive C, but on their network drive instead (as they were always supposed to do). It took us about 2 months, but everyone finally accepts this now standard procedure.

We use deepfreeze and found its excellent - one of our most important tools.

It can be set to thaw machines for updates which helps with your patching policy.

Sometimes it can double the time taken to do a simple task like re-adding a machine to the domain as you have to thaw it first and reboot - but its a small price to pay to keep the machines in a set state for the 95% of the time you need them to be.

Overall a great time saver and quite reliable although the console can be a little buggy at times. 9/10

We are trying to figure out how to use the Faronics mapping tool for User Profiles, the manual isn't very helpful - any have experience with this tool?

Re: Anyone here use Faronics Deepfreeze

I use Deep Freeze on the standalone Music Technology computers. Given that they are specialist machines, there are a lot of settings that if changed can bring the whole thing down.

I have not experienced any problems. A few of the posts I have seen on this topic seem to mention issues like Windows Update. I have not enabled the feature myself, as they are standalone machines with no connection to the outside world, but there is an option within the latest version (6) which enables windows updates to be applied.

Also, not an ideal solution, but if you wanted updates such as antivirus, windows update, or any other automated script to run, you could always set them to unfreeze themselves at set times, and schedule the tasks to run within this time frame. That way they still get updated, but they are frozen and secured when needed.

If anyone has any questions, let me know.

Just my two penneths worth on my virgin post

I have to admit Deep Freeze is a god send I've trialed it and bought about 240 licenses. Haven't used the mapping tool I'll see if I can find out some more info and let you know. Just wish it had the ability to filter certain files, file types and directories out of the frozen state!
