I am new to SiMS (well i know what it does but never really had any involvement in installing it etc.
I have installed Sims.net on a couple of laptops but i am unsure of the permissions that are needed. Lesson Monitor works OK as do other elements but i have had 2 staff complain that Nova T complains it cannot access the C:drive.
Is this correct?
Do certain SimS parts need access the the C:drive. The C:drive is off limits to the Users when they are on the Network.
Some Sims training would be good for me but that's another story.
You can set folder and file permissions using the file system object in AD. Create a folder on the operations master domain controller exactly how it would appear on the workstation i.e. c:\Program Files\SIMS then use the file system obdject to apply permissions to that folder. You do not have to actually place all the files in the folder as you can set the permissions to propogate. But I use simsperm because it sets up permissions for some registry paths, this can also be achieved in AD though.
Is SimsPerm safe to blast out over GPO before i use it?
As none of our workstations will auto-update without me being logged on as administrator.
Thanks.
I've attached the GPO settings report for our SIMSperm policy if anybody wants it. One of the advantages of doing it this way is that it's easy to set a deny entry for your pupil accounts.
After you do a new install of SIMS, you will need to reboot before using it as a normal staff member because the folders need to exist at the time when the policy applies (i.e. during bootup)
We've been told by our local Sims support team (Run by the council) that anybody who uses Sims, needs full local admin on the machine it's running on! I wasn't aware a few simple permissions or that .bat file existed!

Typical first line helpdesk response I'm afraid - sledgehammer to crack a nut
