    Question TightVNC Password Deployment

    Hi guys,

    Anyone use TightVNC atall?

We have successfully deployed it across the network, including the registry keys but for some reason, the password doesn't allow anyone into the admin panel. We have to go to each machine, reinstall it and manually set a new password.

On the website it says copy these registry keys across to other machines, however those registry hives don't exist (not on windows 7 anyway)
    http://www.tightvnc.com/winst.php

    Taken from the TightVNC website:

If you want to install TightVNC on a number of computers, and do not want to repeatedly enter the same password on each machine, install TightVNC once and set the password, then copy the registry settings to other computers. TightVNC settings can be found in the following sections in the registry:
    •HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL\WinVNC3
    •HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ORL\WinVNC3

On our machines We have no 'ORL' hive but we do have a 'TightVNC' hive. Tried deploying the registry values in that and no luck. Should the registry keys be allocated as a machine GPO or user?

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

We dont use the registry keys like that for settings but i can confirm we have the same keys as you.

We do our installs using the msi + command line options listed here: http://www.tightvnc.com/doc/win/Tigh...ller-2.5.2.pdf. If that helps in some way.

so do you deploy the msi through a script with the custom command lines inserted or are you going to each machine and running the command lines manually to install?

We install it onto our install images so its already there when we install and computer. You could use powershell to install it remotely if you have powershell remoting enabled.

This should work, havent tested it though:

    Code:
    Param(
      [Parameter(Mandatory=$True,Position=1)]
      [string]$computer
    )

    $filename="Tight_vnc.msi"
    $filepath="c:\path"
    $params="/param1 /param2 ..."

    copy-item "$filepath\$filename" \\$computer\c$
    Invoke-Command -ComputerName $computer -ScriptBlock {msiexec /i "c:\$filename $params" /passive}
    remove-item \\$computer\c$\$filename
That could be tweaked to process a list (csv or text list).

I use Skeep Console, just click deploy, type in a machine name and viola you have VNC deployed to that machine. In the settings menu is where you setup your password etc.

I've literally just done this on 200+ machines!

I use this script as a batch file and it works brilliantly!

VNC password is set as cheese in this example.

First bit removed Ultravnc (if you already have a VNC client installed, remove if necessary)

Second line installs mirror driver. Useful on Win 7 machines.

Finally, it installs Tight VNC with the password set etc.

    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\unins000.exe" /VERYSILENT /norestart
    "\\server01\msi$\Tight VNC\dfmirage-setup-2.0.301.exe" /VERYSILENT /norestart
    msiexec.exe /i "\\server01\msi$\Tight VNC\tightvnc-2.6.4-setup-32bit.msi" /quiet /norestart SET_USEVNCAUTHENTICATION=1 VALUE_OF_USEVNCAUTHENTICATION=1 SET_PASSWORD=1 VALUE_OF_PASSWORD=cheese SET_VIEWONLYPASSWORD=1 VALUE_OF_VIEWONLYPASSWORD=cheese SET_USECONTROLAUTHENTICATION=1 VALUE_OF_USECONTROLAUTHENTICATION=1 SET_CONTROLPASSWORD=1 VALUE_OF_CONTROLPASSWORD=cheese

many thanks for this! There's no ultraVNC folder for TightVNC so it doesn't work, cant find an uninstaller for TightVNC otherwise I would have just changed the path

    Hi,

That line was in there to remove UltraVNC which was already on our machines.

However I can't find a TightVNC uninstaller, maybe just delete the folder or rename/delete etc?
