ICT School Wages
Just been wondering lately about ICT jobs in schools and it seems like the pay is not as good as what you would get if you were working in an ICT company.
So my question is what job do you lot do, is it in a school and if it's not too personal then whats the annual wage for the job you are doing.

Well its dependent on the part of the country you live in but technicians can be on anything from 15-25k and a network manager should be on 30-35k around here.
All depends on how long you've been there and the school structure I guess.
Technicians - 12k - 24k (IME)
Senior Techs - 16k - 28k (IME)
Assistant/Deputy Network Managers 20k-30k (IME)
Network Managers 25k - 40k (IME)
All based on my experience and job adverts. All based on the location of the school, a central london school will offer more due to cost of living compared to a school in outer leeds for example
With the IT market the way it is, wages have not kept up with their old ways.
So, I'd say currently
Technicians - 12k - 18k
Senior Tech - 16k - 20k
Network Manager - 18k - 26k
In my experience anyway.
Doing a bit of job hunting myself recently and these figures seem to be pretty reflective of what I've seen advertised. There are the odd jobs here and there offering a bit more ( a lot more in some places) but the figures localzuk posted look about right for the average position in a secondary school.

Bristol & Bath wages are all around this figure for NM's, and around the 16k mark for technicians. I have seen some technicians on crazy wages, but most hqave been tuped in from external suppliers.
My role and responsibilities are those of a technician, assistant network manager, publicity officer and web developer; but I'm on a technician salary in the range of £16,000 - £20,000. Currently looking for a way out!
If you do a comparison in the private sector (based upon my knowledge across varying schools in the north) a network manager would more than likely equate out to a be the equivalent of a senior support analyst position (assuming a level of certification), realistically the salary range here can be anything from 24k to 27.5k. Actual technical manager position (operations, technical support) can be in the region of 30-35k. Support Analyst (or what is deemed an IT Tech) is anything from 18k to 22k.
The next step on from there is in the realms of design which can be anything from 40k through to 55k.
Im in the private sector
Working for an IT Support outsourcing company, providing IT Support for companys on a pay as you go basis (so we will charge the custom's company for 15mins todo blah blah task, at a set hourly wage)
I'm on £18,000..
it sounds like I'm doing the opposite to allot of you, your trying to get out of education, and im trying to get in!!
but starting to get slightly put off by the wage levels... ideally, id need to be employed at the minimum of 18,000....(what is the variability of that?)
In Lincolnshire you're looking at about £16-20k for a technician, and £25-30k for NM, but I think the "private sector gets paid more" idea is a little bit grass-is-always-greener, to be honest. I think the working environment in schools is much nicer though, unless you're particularly unlucky with management - the current disciplinaries thread springs to mind. It'd certainly take a fair old pay increase to get me to move on, because I genuinely enjoy what I do (despite years of swearing I'd never end up in IT Support, that's a mug's game, etc.)
The bigger problem is that once you're NM, you've pretty much hit the top of your career path. You can't progress to HOD or SMT or any of the obvious school progressions - it's a two rung ladder that ends at £26k, short of a bloody miraculous/honest job description. So I fear that at some point, if I want to earn more, I will have to move into private anyway...
For my 10p worth, I moved from private into education, and took a modest pay cut in the process (pro rata; taking account of the 20-ish weeks I get off, I'm technically on the equivalent of more money now!). Nothing on God's green earth would ever, ever lure me back into the private sector. I LOVE working in a school. No two days are ever the same - no two HOURS are the same, actually! And the reward of seeing your hard work actually benefitting the kids is just magical. As for me, I'm an ICT Technician, but with that comes managing the network, etc. I think in a school environment, especially one where you're the sum total of its IT department, you should expect to be a catchall roll. And I wouldn't have it any other way!
I've seen plenty of support jobs in industry on lower or comparable salaries to schools.
The big money only seems to come in once you specialise or start contracting.
Part of the reason why I'm getting out completely.

The Helpdesk Manager of a small Uni in Leeds was advertised at 29k-31k recently.
Then big private places like Provident Financial were paying £26k for a Servicedesk Anaylst. But then ServiceDesk Analysts / ICT Techs around Leeds in private can be anything from 12k - 22k... just depends on the job and the little extra job duties they want you to do.
I'm an IT Network manager in a standard size secondary school (approx 1200 students, 150 staff give or take, 20 odd servers mixture or virtual and physical, 675 machines, then AV, etc). We also support 3 primary schools and 1 engineering firm, as well as provide training to those that want it and I'm in the Network Manager pay bracket.
