Used to be v high powered recruitment cons/ headhunter so have done all sorts of CV courses:
Advice distilled is basically:
Number pages so they know if they have got them all (header with name etc and footer with "1 of 3" is good
Always write in third person or leave out personal all together, eg "Responsible for..."
Jobs in reverse order
Job Title in Bold
Top of Ist page - small set of personal details - 2 columns so not to take up too much space
THEN
Education - dont bother to detail GCSE/O levels, just put the number and "including English and Maths" if you can.
Training - external or internal courses
Skills - what can you do/have done? obviously may need to tailor to job applied for
Equipment - Cisco, Netware, wireless,Windows etc. Given that you may be interviewed by non techies, remember to put in things that may be obvious to you but they will recognise- eg Windows XP
If you are lucky, then the above info plus your most recent and most relevant job will take up the first page - this is what you want as most people don't concentrate for longer than one page.
Past jobs - dont be afraid to condense past irrelevant jobs into something like: "Prior to this I worked as an elephant trainer, baboon washer and giraffe recyler"
Never put reasons for leaving unless redundant
Never put salary or requirement or notice period
REMEMBER - all CV's can and should be tailored to a specific job - but don't forget that something else you can offer may be what they are looking to get into - so you would be added value!
All I can think of at present.
Will let you know if I think of anything else - or post a request
Well i was doing really well when reading thru all your info and advice till i hit:
Mine takes up 2 :SQuote:

Nice to know i was doing something right tho as generally i fit what you said.
@Tarqel: ill send u a copy of my CV for you to browse over mate.
Yeah- if you are a member of "Expert's Exchange" don't make that a point of reference in your CV to any special skills ;-)
Some of those people actually think participation in a forum is correlative to having real skills in IT. We wouldn't think that here. Would we?
Joking aside, there have been some good posts on this thread!
Paul ;-)
Thanks very much for that ITWITCH - noted!
Sorry to drag up an ancient thread but its time i updated my CV
any examples flying about that i could take a nosey at ?
ITWITCH - dont spose u have a template or an example of a reasonable cv that you could upload ? ( Just a thought and also being lazy here lol )
Please send him one :wink:Quote:

Thanks webman ( gives me some ideas ).
@ Tony I went through all the templates in word and it didnt have any CV ones, found a ton of other ones and yes I know I can search the web for other templates but gonna leave it for now as I already have one but I just basically needed to udpate my cv as it hasnt been touched for a long time and I wanted some idea of what sorts of things I could put in or take out etc etc.
Techrepublic have some good examples ... and there are lots of job sites out there that will stick the text boxes you fill in into some semblance of a decent CV.
cheers :)
